Crossing of the Fathers
   On November 7, 1776, Franciscan Friars Dominguez and Escalante finally found a crossing of the Colorado River which allowed them to each the eastern shore and return to Santa Fe. John Wesley Powell located the site that now lies beneath the waters of Padre Bay about halfway between Padres Butte and Gunsight Butte, where the river channel made a large loop.
